We live in a Splendiferous time of technology. Did you ever think that you could talk to your watch and it will dictate what you said, then create a detailed text message that you can send to your dog to let him know you will be home late but will bring him a bully stick? Don’t act like I’m the only one who messages their dog. I used to be a PC girl. That is what I learned on and that is what I was comfortable with. I had always heard about Apple products, but thought that they were only for artistic, smart people until a very dear friend introduced me to my first Apple MacBook Air. She assured me that I will never want to go back to a PC ever again. And she was right.
I began documenting my medical journey with pictures and videos, mainly to remind myself what challenges I had overcome. But then after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, I began to see that power of sharing your story. I started this Perky Parkie blog in 2013 with the hopes of extending my reach to people in need of information, inspiration and hopefully a laugh or two.
Recently I was at my local Apple store checking out their iPad Pro, which has a keyboard case that would make blogging when I travel super easy. I struck up a conversation with an Apple creative team member who was impressed by my story and how I’m using technology to reach people in need of support. He asked for my business card and shared their interest in working with me to see how they could get involved. I didn’t expect anyone to actually follow through, but before I knew it, I was meeting with some of the Apple team to create a workshop catered to those with movement disorders.
I am happy to say that everything came together perfectly and we have our first “Moving with Apple” workshop this Saturday. We will be learning how to use technology to monitor, track and improve our overall quality of life. Plus, we will also explore devices and applications that were created with our Parkinson’s challenges in mind. I know that many of you won’t be able to attend because it’s in Southern California, but I wanted to share my excitement about this project. Now, if only Apple could come up with a device that translates Crash’s thoughts… maybe they could call it iSpeakDog?

Hi Perky Parker,
I was dgzd with PD, 7 years ago (2009). I AM 75, male ,live alone , and wud still like the companionship of a woman. Is there a social dating site available for those of us who do not have a caregiver , wife or “S.O.”(Significant Other)???
I’m looking for a friend….someone to talk to, a companion, to share our different Maladies with…..and who knows… maybe more .
I have tried to form a Support Group with the assistance of my Neurologist…but that hasn’t happened yet.
I’d love to speak to u or others that have this awful disease, to learn how to cope with it!
Thank You!!!

IF I communicate with my dogs people will think I really gone off the deep end. I hope it doesn’t track my exercising because I won’t get a passing grade.
PerkyParkie says
It will challenge you to exercise! You will have a passing grade in no time.

What a wonderful idea Allison. I’m looking forward to see how Apple technology and the creative minds that fuel the fire from within our community, develop new tools and devices.
To echo what so many have said, thank you for all you do….your inspiration is priceless and a true beacon of hope.

What a wonderful idea and it’s thrilling to see Apple so interested and involved. I would love to go but have a prior commitment so I hope there’s more in the future. I also like the webinar idea. Thank you for taking your time to do all that you do for all of us.
