I have been hiding in my living room, with the lights down low, curtains pulled, and with all honesty… not bathing every day. The first step of recovery is admitting you have a problem… so here goes. I have just finished 5 Seasons of Outlander on Netflix. I am addicted to the show. There, I said it… it’s out there. Whoa. I feel like a weight has just been lifted off my chest. We’re talking about 67 total episodes of me staring at the television and eating molasses cookies (thank you, Mom and Dad, for enabling me with 2 pounds of treats delivered to my home).
I have been going through withdrawals from the abrupt stop of my Outlander television show and sugar coma. Now, if you haven’t heard about Outlander, I will give you a brief synopsis:
The story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is was immediately thrown into an unknown world in which her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate relationship is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. -Starz
One of the conundrums surrounding the characters is trying to preserve the love they have for one another could unknowingly change the future. Such as when Claire knows that history dictates that in 1746, at the Battle of Culloden, the Scottish people are slaughtered. She goes to great distances to save Jamie by preventing the fight, but she will alter the world’s future if successful.
Through the lusty, steamy, erotic, and uncensored passionate scenes between Claire and Jamie, washed down with molasses cookies, I had a couple of thoughts… like what if I could have the knowledge that my life turned out so challenging, would I want to know? I’m not sure. Looking at my journey with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, full hysterectomy, topped with Parkinson’s disease and deep brain stimulation. We’re talking, 40+ medical surgeries or procedures, over 100 hospital visits, hundreds of thousands of dollars paid. If I could take a look back at my life, what would be different? Also, would I want to try something that could change the path of my life? What would that be?
A final question, would I really want a muscley, Scottish warrior saying things like, “I Am Your Master & You’re Mine. It Seems I Canna Possess Your Soul Without Losing My Own.” Oy vey… if that doesn’t melt your heart, I can’t help you.
I guess I am just putting these questions out in the universe. Would you want to know?
I’m jonesing for a cookie, but I must remain strong… season 6 is coming out later on this year. Oh, Jamie…till we meet again.
John Reyes says
Blah blah blah… molasses cookie. What is a molasses cookie and how would I go about getting your mom to send me one? Perhaps if you showed her a picture of my son and dog. Everyone likes kids and dogs.
Also, of course I’d want to know. The ride is only as good as the person in the car with you. If I knew, I’d have a better person riding shotgun.
Don’t forget my cookies, Smitty.

Hi John,
Kids and dogs might get you a sugar cookie, but if you really want Molasses cookies… you know, the good stuff… puppies are what you need. Lots and lots of puppies 🐶.

The book OUTLANDER was my inspiration to start what has become a full time writing career. ‘What would happen if I fell into a time travel romance?’ is the start of The Fairies Saga, now a twelve book series. Of course, it isn’t (can’t) be Outlander, but that one story was my inspiration.
I’m closing in on my 40th novel now and still binge-watch the Outlander series. However, I’d like to suggest something even more fulfilling: listen to the whole series on audiobooks. All the books in the series plus the Lord John and other ‘bugle novellas’ (as Diana Gabaldon calls them) are available. I can enjoy the stories of John, Jamie, Claire and the whole gang with my eyes closed. Plus there are loads more of them available!
PerkyParkie says
Dani! Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes, I would want to know if Claire was going to be in my future! Oh wait…that wasn’t the question. Life is a journey not a destination thank goodness. We learn how to live it as we go.

I just finished cobra kai which is the updated karate kid… very good. Enjoy the cookies, the new year, and dreams of the Scottish highlands

Finally someone else with a tremor to go to an Outlander” support group meeting with. Be still my Scottish beating heart! What was your important question? I lost my train of thought at “ lusty, steamy, erotic” would I want to know? That’s a hard NO! I’m still living every day, “living” being the operative word, with the premise that there must be a reason or purpose to all of “this? “ if I find it I’ll let you know. However when the news was broken it might have landed a bit more gentle had it been delivered by an extremely ruggedly handsome man in a kilt with a Scottish brogue…..oh be still my beating heart and my tremoring hand! Maybe I could channel that at my next neurological update.
Here’s to the new season and whatever it takes to get there.

Roberta,
You’re comment made me laugh! It’s nice to know I’m not alone! Ha ha!

Downtown Abbey, Bridgerton, The Crown , Queens Gambit all good for binge watching! If you need help on food issues I highly recommend bingeing on My 600# Life! Lol
PerkyParkie says
Susie,
Great ideas for binge-watching. The undoing on HBO is also a really good series.

I binge-watched Grey’s Anatomy. The characters are continually making the WORST possible decisions, which wreaks havoc, predictably, in the lives of those around them. But it’s like a train wreck; you just can’t look away! Then my daughter and I binge-watched Queen’s Gambit. That was fascinating. And short.
As for knowing the future, I would have loved to know that I was going to travel the world and adopt my children! But as for knowing about the Parkinson’s, I don’t think I would want to know THAT. This stupid disease is affecting so many areas of my life. I hate it. But aside from the PD, I love my life, I love my kids, I love my job ……
PerkyParkie says
Karen,
I LOVED the Queen’s Gambit. I haven’t tried Grey’s Anatomy, but that sounds like a good binger.

You could read all of the books until the show starts again. I still enjoy the show.
Sharon Krischer says
Omg! We binge watched it too. My husband loved it as much as I did. Oh Jamie…….we canna wait for your return
PerkyParkie says
Sharon,
Girlfriend, you know what I’m talking about. Ha!
Mary Cantando says
I read the Outlander books TWICE and then saw the movie series. But I can even beat 5 seasons of Outlander. I watched SIXTEEN seasons of Heartland. It is the longest running Canadian TV series. A bit more “family friendly” than Outlander…but a great series…it could carry you to Easter!
PerkyParkie says
Mary,
I like your commitment!
Lynn Hart says
I’ve read the books and also binged watched the whole show so far. Great show. As too whether I would want to know? I don’t think I would want to know. I like anticipating what’s to come rather than dread what I would know is coming.
