I had the left-side DBS battery replaced this week. You might remember my post “I’m all charged up my DBS battery replacement” where I detailed that I was only able to get my single right stimulator replaced with a rechargeable battery because my left side still had juice left. Well, it finally depleted and now I have 2 full-functioning rechargeable stimulators. The surgery wasn’t too difficult. It was outpatient and I was home and healing that evening.
I thought now would be a great time to have guest blogger, Patrick Young give us some information about how we can learn how to rest and relax throughout the day. Now let me tell you, I am going to do a little resting of my own and it may or may not include obscene amounts of Fro Yo. Enjoy!
Take a Deep Breath: Here’s How to Relax and Recharge Throughout the Day

We’ve all been there – long workdays that turn into nights, fights with loved ones, and tiredness all around. While it is challenging to be stuck in a rut with no routine or energy, the good news is that a total reset is super easy. Here, The Perky Parkie shares essential tips to beating the stress and staying relaxed and recharged through your day.
Take a Warm Bath
Warm baths have been proven to deepen the state of relaxation and induce sleep. Try these warm bath options next time you opt for a soak.
- Epsom salts: Epsom salts have chemicals that improve muscle functioning while reducing the inflammation and toxins due to stress.
- Exfoliating scrub: Bath time is a great way to catch up on your exfoliation routine. Look for products with natural ingredients on them, and rub them into your skin to reduce stress levels and improve blood circulation.
- Read: What’s not to love about a glass of wine and a book in the tub after a long day? Let the healing nature of water take over while you keep your mind occupied.
Take a Long Stretch
Exercise is excellent for the body (and essential), but nothing hits the spot quite like a long stretch. Here’s how to maximize the benefits:
- Try stretching your muscles for even five minutes a day – a few minutes in the morning, and then right before you go to bed.
- Taking a yoga class a couple of days a week will relax your muscles, ease your stress, and prepare you for the week ahead.
- Essential stretches to practice include child’s pose, happy baby, and spinal twists.
Take a Deep Breath
Easing the stress of work can be challenging, but grounding and meditative practices reduce some of the tension.
- Stillness: Practicing stillness is a great way to induce meditation and get out of the worries and anxieties of everyday life.
- Breathwork: This one is a great mood booster and endorphin releaser.
- Gratitude: Get out your journal and pen down all the things you have to be grateful for.
Take a deep breath, and then another one. Your lifestyle may be stressful right now, but you’ve earned all the relaxation you can get. Put those candles on, read a book, and get your zen on.

I am preparing to get a DBS implant in four months ahead. I can not figure me operated and being so well as to have a problem with relaxing after a hard day. A hard day means one can expect to work as hard as it was normal in the early days of the disease? Or what?
How normal should I expect to become? Supposing a normal course of events
Thank you!

Hello Ana,
Everyone has a different normal. So trying to figure out how you’re going to feel after getting DBS is tricky. It’s worked well for me and many other people. I think these are good questions to ask your Neurologist. Sending you positive thoughts during this unknown times.

Hi Allison. I am so happy to hear that the one rechargeable battery was working well and that you received the second rechargeable battery, I have have a single battery and controller for both sides of my brain. My battery is now down to 2.80 volts and picking up speed for each month until my battery no longer works . Looks like I am going to replace later this year. I have a Medtronic unit but considering this changeout to be a rechargeable battery. I hate having to go through surgery every 18 months just to replace the battery. Thank you for the blogs. I still get a smile when reading them (except for the one about your losing Crash ☹️😟😓). I am so sorry for your loss.

Hi Chris,
It’s always a weird fear thinking of your DBS battery is going to run out… kind of like a TV remote control. Medtronics does make a rechargeable and I’ve had good luck with it. It will last 10-15 years. I will take that over every 2 years.

When only one side of your two stimulators is working do you walk in a circle? Enjoy your weekend!
