With all the game shows on television, from watching people get slammed onto my face on an inflatable obstacle course on Wipeout,to the always funny Holey Moley, there are many entertainment choices. But there is a limited amount of shows just for Parkies and when I say limited… I mean none! I thought it might be fun to create my own game, called “Parkinson’s would you rather?”
First question:
Would you rather have a noticeable tremor in your arm or freezing of your legs?
-Both of the symptoms rank high on the suck factor… I guess this would come down to personal experiences. If I had a tremor, my ability to put on mascara would totally be impacted, but if my legs would freeze, I would have trouble walking anywhere to show off my luscious lashes. It’s a no-win situation… augh! This game is already irking me.
Classic question… would you rather have more money or more time?
-If I had more money, would that improve my chances of receiving better healthcare? Didn’t think of that, did you?
Would you rather have known that you were going to Parkinson’s disease years before you were officially diagnosed or found out when you did?
-Ok, so kind of a trick question here… I’m already trying to stump you! That is because of the concept called the “80% threshold” in Parkinson’s disease. This means that once approximately 80% of the brain’s dopamine-producing cells no longer function, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease begin to appear. That means many of us had known that something wasn’t right in our bodies, but didn’t get the official diagnosis until symptoms were more apparent sometimes years later.
Would you rather eat no candy at Halloween or no turkey at Thanksgiving?
-I would rather eat no candy at Halloween… said no one ever.
Would you rather have trouble with your speech or always have masked facial expressions?
-Another one I get stuck on. I hate that my speech has gotten worse, but I am also well known for my smiles, so that’s a lugubrious decision.
Would you rather have the mindset of quantity of life or focus on the quality of life?
-I’ve met some Parkies that are making every minute count even if it jeopardizes their overall progression of Parkinson’s and I’ve met others who just don’t want to worry about the future. I guess the best choice is to find a balance… but that isn’t one of the choices.
Would you rather visit 100 years in the past or 100 years in the future?
-I would love to jump in my little souped-up DeLorean and jump 100 years in the future to see what forms of treatment or possibly a cure in the many years to come. But that’s just me…
Thank you for playing Parkinson’s would you rather? As for the contestant who won? You’re all winners to me! What are your “PD would you rather” questions or answers?
dan says
I’d rather eat the turkey than the candy! Great questions!!!
PerkyParkie says
Really Dan?! Turkey? Ha Ha!
Chris says
Would you rather: (all Parkie related questions)
1. Have uncontrollable dyskinesia or uncontrollable freeze-ups and tremors?
2. Have poor hand coordination or to have a weakened and low volume voice?
3. Have distonia in both feet constantly or having Botox shots on the bottom of both feet once a month?
(Injections into the bottom of the foot every 3 months is something I personally dread because that is the most painful area to stick a needle)
PerkyParkie says
Sounds awful Chris!
Diane Kerr says
Yup I
With you every 3 months not a fun visit but the results do help immensely
Peter Whyte says
Dear Ms Perkie, here are my answers, but this was a tough onel.
i’d rather
– a noticable tremor
– know about my PD just when I found out. i would have squandered the message if ealeir.
– more time (broke and happy is a different kind of happy).
– permanent poker fact over freezing, which i do, leads to falling, falling leads to broken hips, which leads to hospitalization, leading to pneumonia, lleading to incumbator, which leads to the end of my quality life.
– quality life over length (conditional on how much life you are offering!
– a permanet absense of candy, than turkey at TG but I was warned earlier . I squandred that advice
– 100 years in the future. I read a lot of books on both and the future is more exciting te me. Wiat, thats tomorrow isn’t it?
Did i get them all?
Here’w one for you, would you rather fight the battle of Covid-19 or fight in WWII? I saw an intervue with a very old women who survived the repeated bombing of her town in England but thught the war we are fighting against this virus was tougher. Hmm. Well whe is in her late 90’s I believe. WWII did not look appetizing to me. All we have to do is stay inside for a year or less (who knows).
PerkyParkie says
Pete,
That’s a tricky one. I guess battle Covid-19… it seems like it everywhere right now though. Scary Larry!
Allen says
Great, thought provoking questions! 🙂
Norma Murphy says
Would you rather have a caregiver living with you or live alone with outside help?
Would you rather be able to walk all day through Disney World or still sing with the clear voice you once had?
Would you rather learn more about PD, as much as you can, or ignore learning about any treatment options, etc.?
PerkyParkie says
Norma,
What great questions! Really made me think! Thanks for sharing.
jan says
Dani,

PerkyParkie says

Dani Haviland says
What I wouldn’t give up (for anything) is my optimistic attitude about life. There’s always a bright side to be found if you only look, right? I think you’ve proved that over and over again to the world. You’ve found your calling and you’re doing a fantastic job! Oh, and I shared this blog on my Facebook page. Here’s hoping Pollyanna-itis spreads a little further today.
PerkyParkie says
Dani,
Thank you for your kind words and sharing my blog! Hope you have a beautiful day!
J P Smith says
You would give up cranberry sauce? Oh no!
PerkyParkie says
Dad, you crazy?! Just the turkey 🦃
